This blog will therefore not be maintained going forward.

The good news is that the Little Green Ride will continue.

My good friends at Central London CTC are planning to run the ride as one of their events. However, it may not happen regularly so please do visit their website to find out when it will next happen.

I'd like to thank all the people who have helped lead the ride over many years for their help and support. I also like to thank all those people who came out on the rides. I do hope that you have all enjoyed yourself.

Take care - and keep cycling

Secondly, just to let you know that this month if you are planning to come on the Little Green Ride, you will get a lie-in as we will be meeting at 10.10 to catch the 10.28 train direct to Stevenage as there will be no stopping service to Knebworth. The rest of the ride will be as usual, a meander through the Hertfordshire countryside punctuated by lunch and, maybe a teastop.

If the weather is reasonable, I will cycle out and meet you all at Stevenage station.

Come back after the ride and I may even have written up something about it.Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11903489959568374395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359068817472662505.post-87330575358493660442013-04-13T16:31:00.000+01:002013-04-13T16:31:05.406+01:00In praise of Eric Claxton
No, not him. Eric Claxton (with an X)

The Little Green Ride regularly takes to the cycle lanes of Stevenage to head out of or back to the station. Sometimes they can offer a useful shortcut (once you have got the hang of them) but they do tend to be a bit of a maze with limited signing and lots of opportunities to take the worng turn especially when they pass underneath the big roundabouts. In fact there is a long standing Little Green Ride joke that we need to stick together on the cycle lanes otherwise any of us could easily get lost and join the other Little Green Riders who found themselves off the back of the ride and cycling around in circles until they drop with exhaustion and many months their whitened bones are discovered next to the rusty remains of their bikes.

The other striking feature of the bike lanes of Stevenage is that, apart from us, no-one else regularly uses them to cycle on. There is the odd dog walker and a moped and maybe someone using the space to teach their child to cycle but that's about it. Stevenage's traffic is mostly carbound.

So who came up with this ludicrous scheme of under-used segregated cycle lanes?

The person we need to thank is a man called Eric Claxton and, like many things, his vision was greater than the reality. His hope had been to build something akin to cycling insfrastructure in parts of mainland Europe. Unfortunately he was only able to complete half the equation to get more people cycling. For whilst he had created a continuous and relatively safe cycle routes he was not able to fulfill the second half of his plan which was to make it harder for people to make short trips in their car. To get people cycling not only do you need to put in the place the carrots but you also need to wield the stick a little.

All this information is coming from a wonderful new book that is coming out shortly, "Roads were not built for cars" by Carlton Reid of Bikebiz, which tells the story of our roads really came into being and the crucial part cycling had in making them what we have today - nothing to do with drivers or so called road tax. Anyway you can read more on Eric's tragic story at http://www.roadswerenotbuiltforcars.com/stevenage/.
The weather came back to bite us with a vengeance in March. I rode out and got the best of the day but after that it was downhill all the way weatherwise. Indeed the weather was so bad that when I called the pub to tell them we were on our way, they were amazed that we were actually cycling after all.
There was no Little Green Ride in January because of the snow that hit early in the year. In February we managed to get a day of sunshine and a dozen of us turned out for the ride to make the most of the good weather.

We were heading to a new pub that John had discovered on one his walks, the King William IV at the wonderfully named Mangrove Green near Cockernhoe just outside Luton.

The ride out included a brief stop at the water cress farm in Whitwell where the cress had just come into season (it is usually harvested between March and June and then from September until Christmas)

Whilst we had great weather (for February) we did come upon evidence of some of the recent turbulence with flooded lanes, one of which Sue gallantly cycled through (after first taking a tumble)

The pub itself, an old 17th Century coaching house, was a splendid site when we arrived, and served excellent food (including a carvery) for a hungry bunch of cyclists.

After lunch John navigated us by a slightly new route into Stevenage, uncovering country lanes we had never been along before, proving that there is always more to discover.
Remember, as usual, to buy a return ticket to Stevenage as we will be coming back from there.

The weather is looking reasonable at the moment and we should get a chance to view the last autumn colours before winter arrives. As it does look reasonably nice I may well cycle out so will you all at Knebworth station.

Hope to see some of you there
You may feel the warmth of the sun in the summer, smell the blossom in the spring and hear the soft silence of the falling snow in the winter but in the autumn all your senses are accosted as we found out on the Little Green Ride a couple of weeks ago.

Above all there are the autumn colours, such a spectrum along the hedgerows and in the woodlands across the fields that, in the words of our group, the ride should be renamed the little multi-coloured ride. Then there is the scent of the smoke from bonfires and fireplaces drifting across our path as we cycle by; or what about the smell of the newly turned earth in the fields? And for sound there is the autumn wind rattling at the branches and tugging at the leaves sending them circling to the ground and dancing along the road ahead of us. There is even a sense of touch when we felt the welcome warmth of the Church Farm Cafe (my favourite haunt these days) to interrupt the autumn chill. Finally, autumn is the season of taste as the hedgerows overflow with blackberries, elderberries, sloeberries and many more.

There was only a handful of hardy souls on the Little Green Ride this month. A few new faces but some very old ones as well who it was great to catch up with. It was also good to find ourselves bumping into the Central London CTC 3* riders at lunchtime. They were just about to leave as we arrived, planning to take advantage of a tailwind to cycle back to London. Our post-prandial ride would be much more leisurely.

I had been on the lookout all day for sloeberries. They are a secretive berry hidden away behind the leaves and thorns of the blackthorn bush. They do not hang in great clusters above your head as the elderberry does, nor do they share the bright colours of the rose hip or the shine of the blackberry. Instead they are a deep purple and often dusty so hard to glimpse. I had been hunting them on various rides for the last few weeks and thought I had missed out. Perhaps the wet and warm summer had brought them on early and the birds had already feasted on them? But a little after lunch, after scanning the hedgerows all day, I slowed to a gradual halt as I passed some likely bushes to discover a trove of sloeberries which we soon began to forage.

There isn't really much you can do with sloeberries. They have a very bitter taste, slightly softened if picked later in the season. I have seen recipes for sauces to replace the cranberry sauce on Christmas Day. But of course the main recipe that calls for sloeberries is sloe gin.

Contrary to some views the sloeberries don't actually make the gin; you buy that from the shop (no need for anything too expensive, though) and add the berries and sugar to create a deep crimson and sweet liquour. Sloe gin is not very difficult to make. My favourite recipe begins with the instructions to drink half a bottle of gin! You can of course, decant it. Then all you need to do is add the berries (pricked before hand) to bring the gin back up to near the neck of the bottle and then add sugar. Leave for a day and then turn it each day. It should really be left for a couple of months before the berries are filtered out. The best way of serving it, I find, is with sparkling white wine.

Cheers!Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11903489959568374395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359068817472662505.post-24259385427934549722012-10-17T18:31:00.000+01:002012-10-17T18:31:10.478+01:00Another lie-in this monthMore engineering works on Sunday so the Little Green Ride starts later.

We'll be meeting 10.10 to catch the 10.26 train to Stevenage. If you are planning to join us at Kings Cross the train is scheduled to leave platform 1 at 10.22.

In the event of extremely good weather* I will cycle out so meet you at Stevenage station. The plan, following discussions last month, is to find sloeberries to make sloe gin. We may have left it too late, however, but we shall see. Look forward to seeing you all on Sunday.

Now that the Olympics are finished the railway engineering works begin again, which meant that our usual train to Knebworth wasn't happening. Our plan, instead was to catch a slightly later train which would take us direct into Stevenage and we could navigate our way through its entanglement of bike lanes and out into the Hertfordshire countryside. Unfortunately the engineering work overran and so the planned train was delayed with, at first no sign of when it would be running. To add to the complications there were riders at Finsbury Park and Kings Cross awaiting the train. And our leader (me) had chosen that Sunday to ride out and was already at Stevenage station waiting for everyone else.

The Little Green Ride knows how to keep calm and carry on, however. After a while (over half an hour) the train sprang into life and we were all re-united at Stevenage and eager to go cycling.

Because we were running late we took a fairly short route for lunch. We headed north out of Stevenage along its cycle tracks. In my opinion these were built more for the benefit of motorists to keep those pesky cyclists out of their way, and less for the cyclists themselves. I have ridden them many a time and I think the Little Green Ride makes up the bulk of the traffic on them! Our route, however, took us through the old heart of Stevenage and past Rooks Nest, once the home of EM Forster and the inspiration for Howards End the eponymous setting for one of his novels.

Lunch was at Church Farm, Ardeley. I am afraid this is one of my favourite lunch stops and if you join the Little Green Ride when I am leading you are likely to end up here where the food miles are measured in yards, the helpings are massive, and the staff are really friendly. And if you fancy a pint you can wander across the road to the Jolly Waggoners run by the same people.

After lunch we managed a little bit more cycling through some of the slightly lumpier parts of Hertfordshire but as usual we stopped at the top of all the hills to admire the view. Autumn was in the air and the clear skies were a paler shade of blue. On the trees the leaves were just beginning to turn. Join us next month and there should be spectacular colours along the roadside. There should also be a wonderful harvest in the hedges as next time it will be perfect for picking sloeberries (if the birds haven't got to them first). There is only use for sloeberries that I can see and that is obviously sloe gin. I will be out next month collecting in preparation.

This month we did encounter other wayside harvests such as honey and eggs. We decided against the eggs as chances are they would end up scrambled before we got home but I did buy a jar of Uncle Tony's honey from Bennington.

We also encountered a wonderful old tractor - a Field Marshall - and I was outed as a bit of a tractor fan.

It was a slightly truncated ride this month because of the late train but enjoyable nonetheless. Hope to see some of you next month usual time, engineering works permitting.

StephenStephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11903489959568374395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359068817472662505.post-71146456324887980012012-09-11T20:59:00.000+01:002012-09-11T20:59:50.048+01:00The LGR continuesIt's been a little while since there has been a posting but the LGR goes on.

The next one is this Sunday 16th September. It is a little early for a weather forecast yet but it looks to be autumnal so should be wonderful colours in the countryside.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
The return of engineering works means we will be catching a later train and getting off at Stevenage.
With the end of summer (and the Olympics) engineering works returns to the railways. This weekend there will be no trains stopping at Knebworth before 11am so we will be catching the 10.24 from Finsbury Park and getting off at Stevenage. For those planning to catch the train from Kings Cross, it leaves at 10.19 from platform 10.
At least you will get a lie-in this Sunday and still be able to go for a bike ride!

Finally, if the weather is nice and there is a tailwind, I may cycle out so will meet you in the ticket hall at Stevenage station whenyour train arrives.

Look forward to seeing you on Sunday
We stopped at the Old Barge pub on the side of the river. This was a unusual urban choice for a lunch stop but it gave us multiple options for lunch which we would be hard to find given the gangs of marauding mothers blocking up all the pubs in the area.

After lunch leaving Hertford, we had a close shave when a bunch of ten year olds on scooters tried to race us along a flat street. We took the moral high ground and ignored their challenge and they quietly backed off.

When we got to Dane End, three of our group peeled off, led by Anna and set out for Knebworth station. The rest of the group headed for Ardeley. It started to pour with rain. We stopped and using a single transferable voting system, we decided to turn back to Knebworth. While the spoilt votes were being inspected by all parties, the rain stopped and after a re-vote, we decided to push on but only as far as the agrarian tea shop at Ardeley. While waiting for our tea, the heavens opened and with what Sue Dorey described as unprecedented luck, we remained under cover and dry in a large garden shed with windows.

On the final run into Stevenage, we were able to test out the comprehensive cycling infrastructure and note that while the price of petrol is at record prices, middle England as represented by the good people of Stevenage had not decided that the situation was that desperate that anyone should resort to using a bike. -ja

Just occasionally, though, we try something different. In September we went to the farm for lunch and in October we decided to go for a Chinese. Our destination was the Lamb and Flag at Colliers End. We cycled there from Knebworth via Alston.

I think the food was liked by all. The pub is quite big and there were virtually no other customers so we were able to enjoy our drinks in the comfort of the lounge bar area before proceeding to the restaurant area to eat when the food was ready. The staff coped with us very well despite us not being unable to book beforehand.

After lunch we cycled via Watton at Stone to Welwyn North where we boarded the train home without having to carry our bikes up stairs. As we were early several people decided to cycle back to London. A great day out with some new faces as well as regulars and returnees. We cycled about 25 miles. Thanks to Sue, John Snuggs and Bill for back and mid-stopping.

John Silvertown<span style=" font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif";mso-fareast-Times New Roman"; font-family:";font-size:16.0pt;color:black;" ><span style="mso-fareast-Times New Roman"font-family:";" >Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11903489959568374395noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5359068817472662505.post-90015202965170373252011-10-13T08:29:00.002+01:002011-10-13T08:33:35.949+01:00October Little Green RideThis month's LGR takes place on Sunday 16th October. I had a very interesting variety of cauliflower in a mornay - it looked almost too pretty to eat! We got to the Red Lion at Breachwood Green with a combination of Tom’s 20th century OS map and compass, and Mihal’s 21st century technology. I do recommend that pub, they’ve got a varied menu, pleasant staff, and bike racks. Despite threatening skies , the only rain we got was a well-timed shower while we were at lunch, and a brief downpour in the afternoon, which hardly dampened us as we sheltered under trees. The real monsoon didn’t hit til we got back to London, so some of the group went for coffee in the café opposite Finsbury Park station.

There were ten of us in total, and we only cycled 19 miles. We decided to miss out the tea stop to maximise our chances of getting back before the serious rain set in. We returned from Knebworth, partly to avoid navigating through Stevenage, and partly because Edward’s ticket was only valid from there, rather than Stevenage.

Sue Dorey<!--[if gte mso
